Nathan Lyon believes facing South Africa in WTC 2025 final will be a challenge for Australia
As Australia is about to face South Africa in the final of the World Test Championship 2025, Nathan Lyon has stated that it is going to be a major challenge for the team.
Nathan Lyon believes that even though Australian team has a lot of experience in winning ICC trophies, taking South Africa in the final of the World Test Championship final is going to be a different sort of challenge. The WTC final is set to begin June 11 at Lord’s as not only the defending champions, but their squad having players who have won the 2015 ODI World Cup, 2021 T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup.
“Having the experience of the guys who have won three (50-over) World Cups and T20 World Cups and obviously the World Test Championship final a couple of years ago, that experience and that pressure in those higher games, it’s going to be, it’s on our side, isn’t it, but it doesn’t mean anything when you come to the game,” Lyon was quoted as saying by the ICC.
“South Africa have got some world class batters and obviously they’ve got some unbelievable bowlers there as well so it’s going to be a good challenge and obviously it’s a one-off Test match,” he said.

The conditions in England offer good level of swing to bowlers whereas bowlers enjoy bounce in Australian conditions. Kookaburra balls are used by the Australians in home conditions, which even offers good grip to spinners once the seam is lost. “It’s going to be different challenge and with foreign conditions and the Dukes ball. It’s going to be two best bowling attacks going at each other which is another exciting thing so it’s going to be a good challenge for all batters,” he said.
Australian squad for WTC final: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster.
