'Going there really grounded me': The Block star Elyse Knowles reveals how a trip to East Timor changed her life

She's the model and reality TV star who is also an ambassador for charity Water Aid.

And after visiting East Timor recently as part of her role for the organisation, Elyse Knowles was left with a newfound appreciation for how lucky she is.

In an interview with this month's edition of Women's Health magazine, the 25-year-old explained it wasn't until she stepped foot in the third world country that her eyes were opened to what she takes for granted back home.

'Going there really grounded me again and made me appreciate every single thing we have in Australia,' Elyse told the magazine.

'We turn the tap on every morning and don’t even think twice about it. People (there) have none of that. They’re getting sick because they have no sanitation,' she continued.

'It’s sad ... but then (we) get to come back to Australia and express what’s happening so others can help, too.'

It's been a reflective week for Elyse and her boyfriend Josh Barker who competed with her on the latest season of The Block. 

The couple took to Instagram to express their appreciation for the past 12 months in a snap that showcased their summer bodies.

'What a year it has been,' they captioned the post. 'Thank you 2017 and bring on 2018! We are ready for you!'

In the image, lingerie model Elyse donned a moss-green bikini top which accentuated her assets and shield her face from the sun with patterned sunglasses.

For his part, Josh opted to go shirtless and added a backwards-facing cap to complete the look.

The loved-up pair were joined by their dog for the happy snap.

Josh had also posted to his personal Instagram account, raving about the duo's impressive year and sharing his hopes for the future.

'It's gonna be bloody hard to beat 2017...... but I reckon 2018 is gonna be just 1 step better,' the carpenter wrote.

'What we have accomplished together over the past 12 months is a lot more than most people will ever accomplish, we were pushed to our limits and we still managed to come out of every experience stronger, still smiling and in love! Bring on 2018 and our projects we have in the pipeline.'
